Tips to Pass the PSM I or CSM on Your First Try
Tips to Pass PSM I or CSM on Your First Try
1. Understand the Scrum Guide Thoroughly
The Scrum Guide is the official source for both exams.
Read it multiple times until you are very comfortable with the roles, events, artifacts, and rules.
Focus on the why behind Scrum practices, not just the definitions.
2. Use Official Study Materials
For PSM I: Use Scrum.org resources like the Scrum Open assessment to practice.
For CSM: Take the official Scrum Alliance training course; it’s often required to be eligible for the exam.
Use recommended books like “Scrum Mastery” by Geoff Watts or “Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time” by Jeff Sutherland.
3. Take Practice Tests
Practice exams help familiarize you with the question style and timing.
For PSM I, Scrum.org offers free open assessments.
For CSM, many third-party sites offer sample questions.
Review explanations for all practice questions, especially those you get wrong.
4. Join Study Groups or Forums
Join Scrum Master forums on LinkedIn, Reddit, or Scrum.org.
Discuss difficult concepts and share exam tips.
Sometimes, hearing different perspectives makes complex topics clearer.
5. Focus on Scrum Roles and Events
Know the responsibilities of Scrum Master, Product Owner, and Development Team.
Understand Scrum events (Sprint, Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Sprint Retrospective) in detail.
Be clear about what happens inside and outside these events.
6. Master Agile and Scrum Terminology
Be fluent with terms like Sprint Goal, Definition of Done, Increment, Velocity, Backlog Refinement, etc.
Questions often test your understanding of Scrum terms in context.
7. Time Management During Exam
Both exams are timed (PSM I: 60 min / 80 questions; CSM: 90 min / 50 questions).
Don’t spend too long on one question; mark difficult ones and return if time permits.
Read questions carefully — sometimes multiple answers seem correct, but only one fits Scrum Guide best.
8. Stay Calm and Confident
Get a good night’s sleep before the exam.
Stay calm during the exam and think through questions logically.
Remember, the goal is to show your understanding of Scrum values and principles.
